UK Immigration – Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and eVisas Updates

As previously reported, physical Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) cards will be phased out and will no longer be used starting January 2025. This is part of the UK government’s plan to create a modernized and digital immigration system. The Home Office has now provided additional details regarding the switch from physical to digital documents to prove immigration status. Some foreign workers may have processed their UK work permits without the need to create an online account, but they will now be able to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to access their eVisa, a digital proof of their immigration status. In the past week the Home Office has in fact begun emailing those with only physical documents/BRPs inviting them to create a UKVI account. Invitations will be issued in phases before the process opens to all BRP holders in summer 2024. Applicants can register for their updates here. Furthermore, while employees who already have an eVisa/UKVI account do not need to do anything as the government makes this change, they should still continue to update their UKVI account with any changes to personal information. Particularly, they should tell the Home Office about any passport on which they intend to travel using the online ‘Update your UK Visas and Immigration account details‘ service on GOV.UK, if this is not already linked to their account, to avoid delays when travelling. Further information can be found here.
