United Kingdom – Reminder on Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Requirement

The UK has implemented an ETA requirement for several new nationalities. Whether you should, or can, get an ETA depends on your nationality as shown on your passport and the purpose of your trip. Different nationalities have been added to the program in phases and a list of currently eligible nationalities is available here. One does not need an ETA if they already have a visitor visa, an exempt vignette, permission to live, work or study in the UK, or have a British or Irish passport. Currently, eligible travelers transiting through a UK airport who will not pass through border control do not need an ETA – check with your airline if you are not sure. If you need to travel soon and need an ETA, you must apply before you travel to the UK, but you can still travel while waiting for a decision. Other nationalities that ordinarily require a visa to visit the UK will continue to do so and should not try to obtain an ETA.
Please note the cost to apply for an ETA through the UK ETA app or the GOV.UK website increased from £10 to £16 on April 9, 2025. Processing time is up to 3 business days. Your ETA is linked to the passport you applied with, and it will be valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner.  An individual ETA is required for each traveler, including infants and children. For more information – and to apply for an ETA – go to https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta.
